You have to take care of your fingernails just like you have to take care of everything else, they can break  like your hair, or dry out like your skin.

Nails grow from a “growth plate” located at the base of the nail. During growth they die and the inside of the cells become filled with a hard protein called Kertain. It is the Kertain that makes our nails hard and tough. Nail growth is related to the length of a finger, so the fastest growing nail is the one in the middle, and the nail on the pinky is the slowest growing nail. If you’re right-handed, the nails on that hand will grow faster, and vice versa. Fingernails grow four times as fast as toenails, and they grow the fastest during the day. A special growth area at the base of the nail controls the speed of the fingernails’ growth. From birth to death, fingernails grow constantly at a rate of .oo4 inches each day, or 1.5 inches in a year.

Above: Lee Redmond holds the world record for longest fingernails. 7.51 meters.

Fingernails are not for just growing and looking pretty, they have to be taken care of, if not then things could go wrong. There are many differnt diseases that your fingernails can get f you do not take care of them. Here are a few of different diseases.

Paronychia is an infection of the nail bed caused by bacteria, fungi, and some viruses. People who have their hands in water for extended periods of time may develop this condition, and it is highly contagious.

Koilonychia is usually caused through iron deficiency anemia. The nail becomes very thin and concave.

Pseudomonas is a bacterial infection that can occus between the natural nail plate and the nail bed. Discoloration may occur that is caused by iron compounds. It thrives in moist places and it feeds of the dead tissue and bacteria in the nail plate. The after effects of this infection will cause the nail plate to darken.

Most people never think about the bad stuff. They do not think about the many diseses their fingernails could, have or the diseases you cna get from your fingernails. Everyone should take care of their fingernails by keeping them clean, not bitting or picking at them, apply moisturizer everyday, and eating a balanced diet and taking vitamins. By keeping your nails clean, you are keeping yourself clean.

What Can You Do With Your Hair? March 3, 2009

If we lived in a perfect world, women would want to be able to wake up every morning and have their hair already done or even have  someone do their hair, but unfortunantly we do not live in a perfect world and women have to wake up every morning and wash and dry and style their own hair, and take it from me, it is not the first thing you want to do when you wake up.

There are differnt textures of hair and different types of hair and the texture and type of your hair also depends on how you can stye your hair and what styles will hold or fall.

Hair texture is measured by the degree of fineness or coarseness of your hair. Hair experts generally agree that there are four major types of hair texture which are Fine, Medium, Coarse and Wiry.

The type of hair you have depends on how you can style it, and there are five different types of hair: Fine, Medium, Coarse,Thick, and Thin.

  • Fine hair is much easier to damage than medium or coarse hair. The biggest problem with fine hair is to gain volume and get hair to hold a style
  • Most people have medium hair.  Medium hair has lots of body and usually holds either a blow-dry shape or any type of hairstyle very well. It has the most styling flexibility of the three hair types. Coarse hair is often dry.
  • Coarse hair is often dry. Coarse hair needs conditioning to keep it under control.
  • Thick hair will look too bushy if cut into a short style. Layer thick your hair since layering adds mobility.

Aside from different hair textures, types and styles, there are also many different hair colors. Hair colors are different because it does not matter what the texture, type or style of your hair, anyones can color their hair any color.

There are four differnt types of hair color: Permanent, Single Process, Semi-Permanent, and Deposit Only.

  • Permanent is just what it means. This makes a “permanent” change in the pigment of the hair shaft.  It does not wash out. It will fade in time, but cannot be simply removed to “bring back” your natural color.
  • Single Process Color Is The Only Permanent Color That Should Be Attempted By The Amateur!Single process means that the color is lifted and deposited in one step.
  • Semi-Permanent color can cover gray and go darker, but can not lighten. It lasts varying lengths of time depending on the product. Suitable for amateur colorists.
  • Deposit Only color can only “deposit” color into the hair,  there are many varieties on the market for the home user.  These usually condition and color in one step.

At some point in every womans life, they have wanted to have a different hair color, or at least wondered what they would look like.  The majority of woman have actually colored their hair, sometimes it turns outlooking how they wanted it to look, however, other times it turns out looking not what they expected it to look like.  You may not like everything about your hair, and although there are some things you can’t change about it, there are also things you can change about it.

Everyone wants to look like someone else, and now they can!

Plastic Surgery is used to enhance the shape and appearence of some parts of the body. People undergo plastic surgery for many different reasons. Some women undergo plastic  surgery for serious reasons, such as to fix body parts, but other people undergo plastic surgery just because they want to change their appearence to look like someone else.

Plastic Surgery is not always pretty. When most people think about plastic surgery they just think it can inhance their appearence and make them look better, but that is not always the case. In some cases, people think that they are inhancing their looks, but they are really making themselves look worse.

Plastic Surgery statistics have changed over the years, they only go up.

  • There were nearly 11.7 million surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures performed in the United States in 2007.
  • Americans spent just over $13 billion on cosmetic procedures; $8.3 billion was for surgical procedures, and $4.7 billion was for nonsurgical procedures.
  • The top five surgical cosmetic procedures in 2007 were: liposuction (456,828 procedures); breast augmentation (399,440 procedures); eyelid surgery (240,763 procedures); abdominoplasty (185,335 procedures); and breast reduction (153,087 procedures).
  • The top five nonsurgical cosmetic procedures in 2007 were: Botox injection (2,775,176 procedures); hyaluronic acid (1,448,716 procedures); laser hair removal (1,412,657 procedures); microdermabrasion (829,658 procedures); and IPL laser treatment (647,707 procedures).
  • Men had nearly 1.1 million cosmetic procedures, increased 17% from 2006.
  • The top five surgical procedures for men were: liposuction, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, breast reduction to treat enlarged male breasts, and hair transplantation.
  • People age 35-50 had the most procedures
  • The most common procedures for age 18-and-under were: laser hair removal, microdermabrasion, chemical peel, otoplasty (ear reshaping) and rhinoplasty.

Plastic Surgery will only continue to grow each year, and people, men and women, will continue to try and inhance their appearences. Some will succeed and some will not.

The Perfect Smell

Have you ever gone into a store and smelled all the perfumes they had until you found the perfect one? Yes, we all have! Picking out the perfect one for you is very hard! It takes a lot of time until you find the one you want to get. There are so many different kinds of perfumes out there, which makes it even harder.

When trying to find the right scent, there are certain steps you can do. The first one is look and see which one sounds good to you. After you have done that look and see what kind of scent it is. For example it may say woodsy or floral.

Now a great way to save money on perfume is to purchase a sample before buying an actual bottle of it. This gives you an idea of the scent and if you really like it. You can find this a major department stores. This is a great idea if you are one of the “picky” ones.

Vera Wang Perfume

You can find the perfect perfume just for you in Santa Monica. At Fred Segal they specialize in find that “perfect” scent that is only for you! Shoppers can be assisted by perfumers who have been trained in-house to mix and match the blends just the way you like it, or to select some to be used “as is.” They have a huge variety of fragrances you will be able to choose from.

I think it would be very fun to be able to find the perfume that is just for me! I always have so much trouble when I go to a department store and try to find the perfume I like. I normally just give up and leave. Some people may not think its as hard as I do, but I guess I am just really picky.

Skin Care February 18, 2009

Have you ever been watching tv and wishing you had their skin? We all can have beautiful skin if we take proper care of it! First you need to determine which skin type you have. There are many different skin types such as: oily, dry, sensitive, normal/combination, or sun-damaged.

The first step is cleansing, a simple key. You have to search for the best cleanser that your skin reponds well with, and stick with it! Always try to avoid washing your face with bar soap. Bar soap drys out your skin and makes it ashy. You need to make sure you don’t wash your face to often. You should wash your face at night, and in the morning a splash of warm water is all you need. You can make your skin dry by washing it too often.

Girls washing their faces.

Exfoliation is the next step to beautiful skin. You need to do this weekly to see results. If you properly exfoliate your skin, you will notice an almost immediate difference.  According to Berg, one of the reasons men’s skin looks more youthful than women’s is because men tend to exfoliate daily when they shave. There are many ways to exfoliate your skin such as: Microdermabrasion, chemical peels and retinoids. You can also use a scrub to remove the top layer of dead skin.

Everyone should always use a moisturizer! No matter what skin type you may have, you should always moisturize your face! Be careful not to overmoisturize, because this can cause you to have clogged pores.

Estée Lauder Idealist

One of the most recomended facial moisturizers is Estee Lauder Idealist. This moisturizer is a lightweight gel-lotion that contains a cocktail of polymers, plant extracts, vitamins and optical technology and is applied to the skin after cleansing. You can buy this at any Estee Lauder counter. It is kind of pricey, but is definitely well worth it!

I think taking the proper care of your face is very important! The more you do, the better you will look later on. It is very crucial that you use the proper products for your skin. They are many good products out there you just have to search for them!

Wake up with Your Make up…not on your pillow, but on your face! February 9, 2009

Wouldn’t it be nice to wake up and already have your days makeup on? Most women would reply “yes”.  Most women in America are guilty of spending alot of their time in the morning putting on their makeup. As much as women hate wasting time putting on makeup, the majority would not go to the extreme by getting their makeup tattooed. But there is always the few extreme cases where there is an exception. Statistics on the procedures are not avaliable but there are people that do recieve the permanent makeup.

Mardel Hervey, a customer that recieved tattooed makeup, responded to the eyeliner tattoos afterwards by saying “Oh no! I look like a hooker!” She then realized that she was also signed up to have her lip liner tattooed as well. And I bet you can guess her response, ” Oh no! I look like the Joker!”.

The reason she responded this way was because her skin had reacted to the tattooing part of the process. Her skin was red and irratated, just like a normal tattoo, but her’s was on her eyes and lips. I couldn’t imagine what a lovely site that was.

Above: A before and after example of tattooed eyeliner.

One of the cons about the permanent make up is what if the fashion of makeup changes? I mean, thank goodness we didn’t have makeup tattooing in the 1980’s. I don’t think permanent blue eyeshadow would be a great idea to have for the rest of your life. Although some artists and customers say the color fade, I think it would just be a horrible idea to have one eyeshadow color the rest of your life.

Above: A woman’s before and after results from tattooed make up.

So let’s look at the safety side of tattooing your makeup on. The inks and dyes that are used for permanent makeup have NOT been approved for permanent makeup usage. As permanent makeup increases in popularity, the FDA is looking into the actual safety of the procedure. They are most concerned with unsterile equipment that can share infectious disease so it is extremely important to be sure that all equipment is clean and sanitized. It is not easily removed and in some cases may cause discoloration to the skin. Blood donations cannot be made for a year after the tattooing is done.

As our group thinks over the procedure of tattooing on your makeup, we have come to a conclusion that if tattooing your makeup is for you, then go for it…but you won’t see us with tattooed lips!

“Fashion Is Architechture: It’s a Matter of Proportions” -Coco Chanel February 6, 2009

Have you ever been flipping through a magazine and discovered the page of ” What to wear for your body type?”. Many women have trouble dressing themselves for their own body shape, thank goodness for Clinton and Stacy.

Most women have trouble dressing themselves because they want to think they have a different body shape then they actually do. There are many different shapes and many different forms of those shapes. To dress your body appropriately, you need to be realistic about your shape and size. Trust me, it definitely works better if you take this into account.

Let’s take into account the shapes of different women’s bodies. There are pear shapes, apple shapes, hourglass shapes, athletic shapes, top heavy, bottom heavy and in betweens.  There are also subcategories in all of these main shapes.

Above: This photo is a picture of many different body types of women.

The influence of celebrities is also a huge way that women decide what to wear. Many celebrities wear clothes that fit their body shapes well. Celebrities know how to dress their own body shapes, while we just try to look like them. We have to dress our shape, not just wear what’s in style. If you have a heavier top, then you should not wear tiny tank tops that someone with a smaller top would be able to get away with.

A good hint is to find a celebrity that has the same body shape as you and has similar proportions. Try to resemble the clothing that your celebrity wears. This is where the celebrity influence comes in handy.

“Highlight the positives and delete the negatives.”  quoted by Donna Karan is an awesome quote to remember when you are trying to put together an outfit. Of course, highlighting the positives will bring out the best of your shape, while deleting the negatives will make the positives look that much better!

Above: The different ideas of men, womens, and the national average on weight and size.

As we know, different genders have different ideas of the “perfect size”. As women, we are often worried about our appearance. Weight has a huge influence on the way women feel. Our group finds the ideals to be close to what we would come up with ourselves. We were taken offguard that the national average was a size 16.

Although the sizes and shapes of women are very different, women can all be beautiful. It doesn’t matter what size or shape you are, dress to your shape accordingly. Remember, confidence is the best fashion accessory!
